Deworm 1000 Children for the Price of Lunch: Here’s How You Can Be a Hero!

You’ve heard the phrase “dirt poor” before, and you may have even used it to describe yourself. But, what if I told you that people in Haiti literally make cookies out of mud just to ease the hunger pangs caused by intestinal worms?

Now, I know this blog/website is usually reserved for issues pertaining to sexuality/gender identity and how they relate to faith, but at the end of the day, this is still a Christian blog/site. And as a Christian blogger, I feel it is also my duty to support worthy causes. This is one of those instances.

Planting Peace, the organization that created “Equality House,” which is the rainbow house across the street from the Westboro Baptist Church, has taken up the project of doing something about these intestinal worms in Haiti. Here are some basic facts:

  • 90% of Haiti’s 3.2 million children have intestinal worms
  • These worms eat 20 to 40 percent of the nutritional intake of these children
  • The worms can be easily killed by taking one small pill
  • Each pill literally only costs one penny

You read that right: for as little as $10, you can be responsible for deworming 1,000 of the 3.2 million children of Haiti. That is kind of awesome, is it not?

I know we all have very busy lives, with very busy schedules, and very tight budgets. I get it. I’m a school teacher and writer; I don’t have much to work with, either! But knowing that $10 can positively help 1,000 children is kind of overwhelming! I mean, that’s basically the cost of a large upsized meal at McDonald’s!

So, I’m asking each one of my readers to join me in simply giving $10 to this campaign, and be a part of something much larger than ourselves. This is the real work of the Kingdom of God, and there are 1,000 little Haitian children that will thank you with their lives – literally.

Wallace-BrandonBRANDON WALLACE worked for several years as a Southern Baptist youth minister in Arkansas, but left his post in January 2012 for quite a few reasons; the main one being that he is gay.  Two things he’s always known about himself: that he was gay, and that he was called to be in ministry. He spent most of his life trying to reconcile his feelings with what was taught about Scripture, and after many years of toiling over the Scriptures and struggling with God, he finally came to terms with his theology, sexuality, and his faith.

Brandon is an English teacher, and lives in Memphis, TN where he attends a mainline denominational church. He shares his continuing journey, struggles, and battles with God on his blog, The Gay Christian, and his book, “Straight-Face,” about being in the closet deep inside the Evangelical church was released in 2014.
