To My Wonderful Gay Children… Welcome Home

More today from Susan Cottrell’s “Jesus Blog” – a word from Jesus to you…

My wonderful children, who just so happen to be gay.

Has it been awhile since you have felt at home in your life? With your family? At a church? With me?

There is a story of a woman on a long road trip vacation with ten family members. Near the beginning of the trip, her two-year-old little girl would say “I want to go home.” But when they got to the hotel and she saw the rest of her family, the child would say, “We’re home!”

Home to this child’s pure and innocent heart was wherever the people were who she loved and who loved her.

On this journey, you may indeed have lost family members, even your parents. You may have lost your church or your friends.

Why?

Because they will not accept you being gay. Because they will not honor the desire of your heart to love and be loved – as you are, for who you are.

I want you to know that this has nothing to do with you. It is their issue, not yours.

I also want you to know that you always have a place in my heart.

When you are with those who love you, and those you love – you are home.

When you are in a community that accepts and approves of you – you are home.

I know many people who say they love me have done things to hurt you. They did things in my name and for that I am in sorry.

But please know that what they said and did to hurt you did not reflect the truth about me, my heart or how I feel about you. Not at all.

But there are people out there who say they love me, and who also love and accept you exactly as you are, and who advocate and celebrate your life exactly as it is.  Their hearts and minds are open and at peace. Their love is beautiful and sweet.

You will know them when you meet them.

Welcome home.
