I No Longer Wanted To Hide

“For the past 4-5 years I was hoping for the day that I would just go to sleep one night and not wake up the next.” You may find David’s story surprising, or maybe all too familiar. In either case, it is inspiring – and I want to share it with you today… I was raised very traditional Southern Baptist–from preschool to 7th grade I went to the school at the church. My family has strong ties to the church. My dad’s dad (my grandfather who passed before I was born) was one of the like 6 people that...

Learning to Enjoy the Ride

Ihave always had a heart for God. However, it wasn’t until my freshman year of high school that I began to understand the need to have a personal experience with Him. I was into every activity the Church of God had to offer. VBS, youth retreats and church camp. Oh, church camp! That is where I really “Got it”. The altar services were deep and life changing. This is where I began to feel His presence in my life. Later on in my spiritual journey, I felt there was something more that I needed, I just couldn’t put my finger on it. I saw religious...

Birthgay Decisions

30years. The big Three-Zero.  One score and ten.  Some of you may be some distance from reaching this milestone. Some of you may be higher up on that proverbial hill. Or over it. Heh heh. What do you think your life would be like when you reach 30? Or did you have life figured out when you were 30? I see my friends getting married, having their first kids, even their second ones. They are buying houses, moving on up in life and living the Malaysian dream, which really isn’t too different from the American dream, I guess. But ours usually...

Opening My Mind, Opening My Heart

My Christian friend posted a note on her Facebook page about homosexuality, challenging the assumption that homosexuality is a sin and is condemned in the Bible. I was livid. How dare she support something so wrong—something the Bible clearly does condemn as a sin? Loving the LGBT community was one thing, but outrightly supporting their actions was unacceptable. Love the sinner, hate the sin. Isn’t that what Jesus taught? I typed an angry response into the comment box where I argued, as calmly and carefully as I could, that being gay was a...

Tapes of My Life

This is the first of a series of live blog-posts by a young, lay church leader, coming to terms with what it means to be not only gay and Christian, but to serve God’s people in a Pentecostal/Charismatic setting in Asia.  Hi there.  I’m a 29 year old Christian guy from the Far East who also happens to be gay. I decided to start writing after being inspired by another gay Christian guy’s blog. Kudos to him! This originally started as an anonymous blog post but has somehow made its way here to IMPACTmagazine. I hope to let other gay Christians...

Racism at Eleven o’Clock Sunday Morning

Country and small churches were important to my family – as they were to me – on into manhood. But when I finished my undergraduate work at Ouachita and moved to Houston I found myself withdrawing at least intellectually from that which I was seeing and feeling in my native region. I was well aware of what existed in my home state. My last spanking from my father was for saying “yes Sir” to an African-American man. While I was preaching at the Landmark Baptist Church in Bradley County, one man (whose name I still remember) stood...
