TDOR 2015: A Malaysian Transwoman’s View

Since 1998, candles are lit throughout the world every 20th November in memory of the violence done to trans* people all over the globe. 2015 happens to be the year of Fallon Fox, Laverne Cox and of course Caitlyn Jenner in the United States — and also a year where transgender related deaths there doubled compared to last year. With such frequent murders, one would think there is an open season upon transgender America. We are already facing massacres throughout South America, along with many deaths recorded even in Europe. Each country...

The Pope’s visit to the US: Mixed Messages for LGBTQ People

Pope Francis’ well-publicized visit to America this past week sent mixed messages about LGBTQ people. On the bright side, the Pope brought great personal warmth and a welcome focus on justice for the poor and protection of the environment. A native of Argentina, he spoke Spanish and obviously connected with many of America’s poor Latina/os. His speech to Congress was impressively intelligent, highlighting a diverse group of four Americans: Martin Luther King, Abraham Lincoln, and two Catholics who were once censured for their prophetic views:...

The Conservative War Against Gay Rights: Why “Natural Law” is a Weak Defense

The jurists of natural law seem to me to be in that naive state of mind that accepts what has been familiar and accepted by them and their neighbors as something that must be accepted by all men everywhere. – Oliver Wendell Holmes, Supreme Court Justice, “Natural Law” (1918)   With the right for same-sex couples to marry now constitutionally established in the US, you’d think the war against gay rights would be over. But, as the Republican candidates for President are still demonstrating, the hearts and minds of conservatives are...

“Audacity”: Nothing Says “I Have No Respect for You” Quite Like Giving a Copy to a Gay Person

In 2013, the owners of “Sweetcakes by Melissa” refused to make a wedding cake for a lesbian couple. They were ordered by the State of Oregon to pay the couple $135,000 in damages, which they continue to refuse to pay. Instead, they decided to send cakes to gay rights groups, with the message “We really do love you!” inscribed in the icing — along with a copy of “Audacity,” a video defending Christian views against homosexuality.  Kathy Baldock writes why this may not be such a great idea … Ray...

Family Research Council uses Deception and Junk Science to Bolster Anti-Transgender Policies

The right-wing Family Research Council (FRC) recently published a position paper to critique and describe the transgender movement and ideology as they perceive it (June 19, 2015). The opening sentences of “Understanding and Responding to the Transgender Movement” pronounce, “In recent decades, there has been an assault on the sexes.” This is only the beginning of the academic problems used to construct the document. The words were written not about the transgender community, but rather, were written in 1977 in response to “the steady...

Celebration and Sadness: Mixed Feelings over Marriage Equality

I believe that celebration is the appropriate response for what has just happened in our nation with the passing of gay marriage for the entire country. 6/26/15 was a monumental day that will go down in history for being a day of justice and equality for the LGBTQ community. We are in exuberant celibration because of the many obstacles that we have overcome as a people to see the arrival of this day. We are also overwhelmed by the love and support of the family, friends, and members of our churches who have celebrated this victory with us....

And then God struck …. Not.

Minutes after the US Supreme Court handed down their ruling overturning bans on same-sex marriage, posts were already going up on Facebook and across the blogosphere about “Spitting in the face of God” and “God’s impending wrath on America. *Sigh* Really? Of course, this kind of reaction is not surprising. There are a surprising number of people who are invested in preserving tradition and a strict moral code that does not allow for love between two people of the same gender. It’s a religious thing, not a...

What Bruce Jenner’s Interview Says About Privacy—His and Ours

The nail on my little finger is all sparkles: green mostly, but with glints of purple, peach and pink besides. I owe this burst of glitter to Sally Hansen Snow Globe polish, which my wife claims is the rightful domain of six-year-old girls. For me, it’s the first all-out expression of my genderfluid self—or, more precisely, the vibrant woman who lives in my soul. Based on that, you could assume the Bruce Jenner interview resonated with me, and you’d be right. But not for the reasons you might think. Sure, being on the Q end of LGBTQIA, I...

Christians: Stop letting hate control the conversation on LGBT equality!

As the country moves forward with the idea of embracing marriage equality after the Supreme Court hands down their ruling, a small but vocal smattering of anti-gay bigots have dug in their heels for an all-out attack on the LGBT community. Most legal analysts (even the anti-gay ones) believe the court will strike down all bans on same-sex marriage when they hand down their ruling in June. Verbal arguments were heard on April 28. Basically, for a bigot with a microphone, this is a pretty uncomfortable time. The country has moved past their...

The Rock & the Rainbow: Homeless LGBT Youth Finding Jesus in Condoms

In Los Angeles, a young male prostitute thinks he is being approached by another man for sex. As Rev. William Griffith gets closer, the 17 year old smiles sheepishly as he reads the t-Shirt worn by the unconventional street pastor dressed his normal attire. Shorts and sandals. The shaved head and thick, grey beard gives him some authority in the darkness of the Los Angeles streets. “Hi, I’m Pastor Will, and I want to make sure you know somebody loves you.” “EVANGEL PACIFIC MINISTRIES” is emblazoned across the...
